In Spring, we typically find ourselves searching for small Redfish, Sheepsheads and Speckled Trout, for eating, in the outside bays and beaches. The first half of March is usually good for the Bull Redfish fishing as well. April and May are probably the toughest time of the year to catch these oversized Redfish. The high Mississippi River pushes them offshore. For the most part, March and April are the best time of the year to target Sheepshead as they are great eating fish. They gang up at the shallow water well heads offshore. The slot Redfish are definitely on our target list during the Spring months. In addition to the Redfish late April and May, the Speckled Trout usually start showing up along the coast line. We use frozen shrimp to catch the Sheepshead and live shrimp for Redfish and Trout. It's called light tackle fishing at its best. You have to wear the fish down before it can be netted. Depending on the river stage, the Redfish, Trout, and Flounder move into the river and mingle with the freshwater fish. October, November, and December are, again, a great time to target big Bull Redfish, but it is also the best time of year to catch eating size Speckled Trout and Triple Tail. Fall is the time of year when we have the option of fishing in the clean green waters of the Mississippi River or the outside coastline.
